When to give a certificate of achievement

An achievement certificate marks a result: a goal reached, a test passed, a skill learned or a target hit. That is what sets it apart from a certificate of participation, which thanks everyone who took part, and a certificate of appreciation, which thanks someone for their help. Choose achievement when you can name what the person did.

    Certificate of achievement wording examples

Each example is the line before the name, the name, then the achievement line.

A different achievement for each person

Put each person's achievement after their name: a tab, “|” or comma, then the text, for example Priya Shah | for reading 40 books this year. Pasting two columns from a spreadsheet does the same, and a CSV file with the columns Name and Award can be imported directly. Anyone without their own line gets the achievement line from the Wording section.

More wording, whole lists and printing

The wording guide has 14 more certificate of achievement wording examples, each with a link that fills it in here. To make one for every name on a class, team or staff list, see how to make certificates in bulk from Excel or Google Sheets. For the last week of the school year there is also an end-of-year awards list with an award for every child. Before printing on card, read how to print certificates for paper weights and print settings.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a certificate of achievement and a certificate of completion?

A certificate of completion says someone finished a course or programme. A certificate of achievement names a result, such as a grade, a target or a new skill. If a course ends with a pass mark, either works; use achievement when the result is what you want to celebrate.

What should the achievement line say?

Name the result and, if it helps, the effort behind it: “for improving her reading age by two years” or “for 100% attendance at training and a personal best in the 800 m”. Specific lines mean more to the person and to anyone who sees the certificate later.

Can I print achievement certificates for a whole class at once?

Yes. Paste up to 100 names, one per line, or import them from a CSV file. Every name gets its own page, and each can have its own achievement line.

Can I add our school or club logo?

Yes. Under Design and paper, choose Add school or team logo (PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG under 2 MB). The logo stays in your browser and is printed at the top of every certificate.
